Senators, advocates launch breastfeeding exhibit
A photo exhibit was recently launched at the Philippine Senate to remind the public of the importance of promoting breastfeeding and its crucial role in raising healthy generations of Filipinos, as the Philippines marked September as National Breastfeeding Month.
Called, ‘It’s Now or Never: Breastfeed your Child,’ the exhibit was opened by senators and a group of breastfeeding mothers on August 12 and ran until the 16th.
Lawmakers led by Senator Pia Cayetano, together with senators Cynthia Villar, Nancy Binay, Sonny Angara and Sonny Trillanes joined breastfeeding advocates in simple ceremonies held at the second floor hallway of the Senate in Pasay City.
The exhibit featured photos of members of ‘Newlyweds at Work,’ a support group of newlywed mothers who practice and believe in breastfeeding. The photos were courtesy of Stanley Ong Photography and Life Photography Inc.
Among the mothers featured in the exhibit are: Katrina Demetrio, Germaine Angeles, Candy Chu-Chao, Angela Paloma, Bing Gueverra, Cheng Guzman-Duran, Patricia Grace Soliman, Flordeliz Bermudez, Cheryl Chan-Wong, Mia Alcantara-Santiago, Jap Delmo, Carolyn Tang, Rhessy Laine Santos, and Maria Grace Penara.
Earlier, Sen. Pia S. Cayetano delivered a privilege speech to mark the start of World Breastfeeding Week and Breastfeeding Month. Read speech HERE. Cayetano, who authored the Expanded Breastfeeding Law, also called for an inquiry into the country’s compliance with various laws on breastfeeding and regulation of breastmilk substitutes. #
